Jerusalem
The multi-layered reality of Jerusalem as seen from the perspective of a young girl. The fundamental question that occupies her-what is the role of language in the human story?
On the wings of the language, she travels back 2430 years – to a world without technology – how did a whole nation return to it’s land 100 years after being exiled and erect another temple? What compelled these people to return from exile, leave their newly established lives? Only to make the same journey 70 years ago.. again.
What causes them to migrate back like a flock of birds?
“..If I forget you O, JerusalemMay my right hand forget her skillMay my tong cleave to the roof of my mouth,If I do not remember you JerusalemIf I do not exalt Jerusalem above my chief joy.” (Psalm 137:5)
This sentence was written in Babylon during the first Jewish exile and is recited at every Jewish wedding ceremony as if to imprint on every Jewish soul, on the flesh of those in attendance – the words, the longing. …and so, the direction is not a question.
