Blessed Are You
Is there a collective memory concealed within human language?
Flawed parchment is stretched on a stainless steel frame. The edges of a tear in the parchment are stitched with sinew mimicking surgical stitches. The writings, “Blessed are you for not creating me ” on the piece are taken from the first words recited by orthodox Jewish men at the beginning of the daily morning prayers. “Blessed are you, Lord, who has not created me a woman, blessed are you, Lord, who has not created me a gentile, blessed are you, Lord, who has not created me a slave”.
Is it possible that there is a connection between women’s social condition and the collective memory that has been created by a repetitive prayer for over millennia?
